THE DAILY PIC: For Tentacle Thought nr:15, his piece in the current group show at Andrew Kreps Gallery in New York, Navid Nuur disassembled the fluorescents in the ceiling and wired them in at floor level. It’s a riff, obviously, on Dan Flavin’s first ideas for fluorescent-tube pieces, whose components were supposed to be humbly sourced at your neighborhood hardware store. What Nuur adds is an awareness that once Flavin’s pieces are shown in a gallery, they become an extension–social, but also mechanical and electrical–of the elaborate “machinery” that turns art into art.
