THE DAILY PIC (#1771): In the current show called “The Woman Question,” at Galerie St. Etienne in New York, I was particularly struck by this drawing of a baby executed (the drawing that is, not the baby) by Egon Schiele in 1910.
Rather than the usual image of maternal cuddling, here we get a strange adult gesture that seems almost some kind of rebuff of the infant.
Trust Schiele, master of tortured sex, to capture the tensions inherent in love of all kinds. (Photo courtesy Galerie St. Etienne, New York)
