The female sexual anatomy has come to the fore in America’s presidential race, with a recently surfaced video capturing Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump bragging about grabbing women by the crotch. Riding that wave, Russian punks Pussy Riot have released a new video glorifying women’s reproductive organ.
“Don’t be stupid, don’t play dumb,” they sing in the chorus, “vagina’s where you’re really from.” The song’s title, “Straight Outta Vagina,” riffs on N.W.A.’s 1988 debut studio album, Straight Outta Compton.
As it happens, the group recorded the song in February, long before the Trump video surfaced. All the same, the group says that the song relates to the candidate.
“This song could be considered an answer to Trump,” singer Nadya Tolokonnikova told the Guardian, going on to add, “But I believe the idea of powerful female sexuality is much bigger than any populist megalomaniac man. Vagina is bigger than Trump.”
Seemingly referring to their own experience of persecution by Russian authorities followed by worldwide fame, the band sings, “If your vagina lands in prison / then the world is gonna listen.”
Elsewhere, the lyrics refer to the prevalence of female nudity in major art collections: “Vaginas in the art museum / and people buyin’ tickets just to see ‘em,” as four dancers in turtlenecks and panty hose pull a killer dance move, thrusting their hips forward in unison.
Actors in the video playfully reverse gender roles, as a group of women in underclothes stand at urinals, a group of men seated on toilets wear red high-heeled shoes, and female bodybuilders flaunt their physiques.
But the video’s star turn is by a girl of about 10 years old, who shows the rest of the actors how to lip-synch, gesticulating like a born rapper.
Featuring guest appearances by Desi Mo and Leikeli47, the video is directed by Phillip R. Lopez.
