For our final roundup of the year, we’ve brought together five intriguing artists ranging from emerging to established that captured our attention. This is only a small sample of the numerous artists we’ve found and started following this year, and there’s plenty more to be seen on the Artnet Gallery Network. And be sure to keep an eye out for our next roundup in the New Year.
Suchitra Mattai at K Contemporary
Originally from Guyana, South America, and currently living and working in Denver, Colorado, Suchitra Mattai has spent time living around the world—from Udaipur, India, to New York, New York. Drawing inspiration from these diverse and varied environments, as well as her own lived experience, Mattai’s work frequently questions and examines ideas around narratives, built worlds, and the connections found between humans and their contexts. She is also recognized for making use of various materials as part of her practice, including painting, fiber, drawing, installation, video, sculpture, and more.
Joan Snyder at Anders Wahlstedt Fine Art
With a career spanning more than five decades, American artist Joan Snyder has developed a distinct visual language through painting that engages with both personal and collective emotion and experience. Beginning her career when Minimalism was at its apogee, Snyder maintained a creative commitment to feminist practices. She also employed non-traditional techniques to create her work, leading to deeply personal yet widely relatable compositions. Snyder has been the subject of several solo museum exhibitions, including at the Jewish Museum, New York, and the Rose Art Museum, at Brandeis University, Waltham.
Josiah Ellner at Latitude Gallery
Chicago-based artist Josiah Elner is a recent graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he received his M.F.A. this year. His work frequently examines the relationships between humans and nature through the lens of the current moment, namely the Digital Age. He was recently part of a dual-artist show with Latitude Gallery, New York, where he presented six oil paintings composed primarily in shades and hues of blue, portraying nature-inspired landscapes and elements of figuration rife with imagination.
Stephanie Pierce at Jupiter
Stephanie Pierce received her M.F.A. in painting and drawing in 2006, from the University of Washington in Seattle, and her work is included in several public and private collections, including the Museum Fine Arts, Boston and the Walton Family Foundation in Bentonville. Her work is marked by a pervasive and contemplative atmosphere, where figuration is pushed to its limits through experimental arrangements and color palettes. Each composition conveys a distinct sense of intimacy by capturing everyday subjects and scenes, and explores the effects of time and light.
Cey Adams at West Chelsea Contemporary
American visual artist and graphic designer Cey Adams garnered global fame with the founding of Def Jam Recordings, which has championed artists such as LL Cool J, Jay-Z, and Mary J. Blige. Alongside his work in music, Adams’ visual art practice is recognized for its bold use of medium and evocation of Pop art, comic books, and hip-hop culture. The recent subject of a solo exhibition at the gallery West Chelsea Contemporary in Austin, Texas, his projects have included an homage to the 150th anniversary of Levi’s denim 501 cut jean as part of his “LOVE” series, and his “Trusted Brands” series, which takes inspiration from 20th-century logos.
