Fellow art travelers, just because the year is coming to a close, doesn’t mean that museums or galleries must follow suit. Chances are you’re cozied up somewhere with a cup of cocoa waiting for your in-laws to get the hint and hit the road—but if you happen to be in one of these major cities, we’ve rounded up our favorite museum exhibitions from each. Whether you’re in London, Los Angeles, Berlin, Paris, Beijing, or New York, you’ll always have some art to sneak off to.
In Asia, Beijing’s Red Brick Art Museum presents a thorough examination of Andres Serrano, packing in 53 photographs and videos from a wide array of the artist’s major series. Popping over to Europe, you have the sumptuous “Art and Space” exhibition at the Guggenheim Bilbao, which pays tribute to the legendary building with Modern and contemporary masterworks by the likes of Lucio Fontana, Eduardo Chillida, and Eva Hesse. Londoners, you still have time to visit the authoritative Tate Modern retrospective of Amedeo Modigliani, which brings together some of the artist’s most stunning and sensuous nudes. Over in Los Angeles, the ever-popular Yayoi Kusama gets our pick with her “Infinity Mirrors” installation. It’s only on view until New Year’s Day, so hurry if you want to get a peek—if you can still get tickets.
Meanwhile, Berlin hosts the multimedia work of Monica Bonvicini, an artist whose diverse practice is unified by her fascination with architecture. In neighboring France, Parisians get to explore the riotous, celebratory, and timeless black-and-white photography of Malick Sidibé at the Centre Pompidou. This notably marks the very first retrospective of the artist outside of Africa, and is an unmissable tribute to one of the most underrated photographers of our time. Another artist who is finally getting their due is Carolee Schneemann, whose “Kinetic Painting” show at MoMA PS1 in New York represents the first serious survey of her 60-year career. It’s about time.
