When you’re browsing for artist interviews online, Bloomberg Business may not spring to mind. But that’s what the company wants to change with their new TV series “Brilliant Ideas,” a look into the work of a select group of internationally acclaimed artists that includes Mariko Mori, Francesco Clemente, and Cornelia Parker, among others.
Now that art has become a bona fide asset class, businesses are quick to hop on the creative class train. For example, Citibank works with Christie’s auction house to lure in young heirs with aesthetically-minded “training camps” and Absolut is now selling prints online.
Claudia Milne, commissioning editor of the series, told artnet News that Bloomberg’s audience is “deeply engaged in the art world.” The editorial focus is on six subjects: business, finance, markets, power, economics, and technology, and the company felt that art “touches all of these areas.”
Milne went on to say, “It’s really about looking at the range of artists around the world who are influential in different mediums, but who also touch on major global themes. We want to shine a spotlight on up-and-coming artists—beyond those that viewers might be familiar with,” she says. “We’ve also made a concerted effort to highlight artists who are currently exhibiting.”
Each episode is half an hour and is an in-depth interview with each artist, and will run weekly until April 2016. Upcoming segments will feature Subodh Gupta, Theaster Gates, Xu Bing, and many more.
