The Austrian pavilion has secured a space in the one-to-watch column ahead of the Venice Biennale next spring after asking Yilmaz Dziewior to commission their 2015 biennale effort. Dziewior currently runs the Kunsthaus Bregenz, which despite not being located in a major European capital has come to the forefront of critical reception on the continent under his leadership.

Looking towards choosing an artist for the pavilion, Dziewior tells Austrian daily, Der Standard that he wants to avoid a stereotypical Venice move of focusing too heavily on the context of the pavilion itself: “My selection will confront not only the space and rich historical context of the Austrian pavilion but also in equal measure be an exhibition of images as powerful for their content and thematic properties as for their aesthetic value.”

Dziewior moved from the Hamburger Kunstverein to Bregenz in 2009. There, he led off with a landmark show of Cosima von Bonin.
