Celebrating ‘Alexander the Great’ at Paul Kasmin Gallery
Patrick McMullan
Last night, Paul Kasmin Gallery opened two exhibitions, “Alexander the Great: The Iolas Gallery 1955–1987”, and “Jules Olitski: Mitt Paintings.” The former, a showcase of works by an array of major artists whose careers were influenced by 20th century art dealer Alexander Iolas, was greeted with much fanfare. Though relatively unknown today, Iolas is credited with mounting Andy Warhol’s first and last shows, bringing Surrealism to the United States, and influencing the New York art scene with both his impeccable taste and his eccentric personality.
Afterwards, guests including Sophie Matisse, Jane Holzer, and Claude Lalanne enjoyed a stylish dinner at Indochine, where the atmosphere was festive yet intimate.
