German painter Corinne Wasmuht was awarded the €12,000 Käthe Kollwitz Prize last night at Berlin’s Akademie der Künste. The prize brings with it an exhibition, which runs through August 10 and features a retrospective selection of 20 of Wasmuht’s paintings. Remarkably, that represents a quarter of the mere 80 works that she has produced over the past 25 years. The show features some of her earliest production—two are from her first exhibition in the the early nineties, which she said, “was a total flop.” Neither sold and bear the description, “property of the artist,” on their placards. “I’d like to see them gone,” Wasmuht quipped. Most of the other works are on loan from major museum collections. Photographs may hardly do the minutely detailed, and meticulously layered paintings justice, but for those who can’t make it to Berlin, we’ve compiled a quick tour of the show, below:
