Cory Arcangel’s innovative approach to contemporary art clearly extends to all parts of his artistic endeavors.
Art News reported that the American new media artist known for his amalgamations of digital and traditional mediums has presented a catalogue in the form of a teen magazine for his upcoming solo exhibition at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GAMeC) in Bergamo, Italy.
The show titled This is all so crazy, everybody seems so famous, named after a line taken from Miley Cyrus’s hit song Party In The USA, addresses the themes of digital addictions and pop obsessions in contemporary culture.
In an interview with Dazed Magazine, Arcangel addresses the catalogue’s format, “It’s designed like a teen magazine that would have One Direction on the cover, but instead of them and pop stars throughout, it is pictures of all my work. I had 20 contributors for it who were able to contribute anything they wanted. There’s quizzes, […] a trend-report, all stuff that would be in a teen magazine.”
The aim is to overturn the traditional exhibition catalogue and replace it with a more accessible and contemporary publication. The catalogue features essays by international curators alongside features typically found in magazines marketed to teens.
