An exhibition exploring the influence of erotica on on contemporary design, fashion, and art has opened in Lausanne, Switzerland, reports Art Daily.

Entitled “Nirvana. Strange Forms of Pleasure,” the exhibition features 200 pieces by over 80 artists and designers that have drawn upon erotica in their work. The exhibition includes works by high-profile participants such as Zaha Hadid, Matali Crasset, and Atelier van Lieshout.

The exhibition examines the boundaries between taboo and acceptability by presenting material normally confined the private environment in a public setting. Exhibits range from photography and jewelry to furniture and seek to challenge common perceptions of eroticism and pleasure by presenting subconscious sexual perceptions in physical forms.

The show’s curator Marco Costantini told Icon Eye “The idea of the exhibition was born more than two years ago from the observation that a growing number of creators were being inspired by the fetish world, particularly in design. Whilst this influence has been well known in the art and fashion world for a number of years, this trend was hardly commented on in the field of design. The objects exhibited in Nirvana directly address questions related to sensuality.”

The exhibition is on view at MUDAC (Musée de Design et d’Arts Appliqués Contemporains) until April 26, 2015.
