The winners of the first annual Prix Net Art have been announced. As Art Forum reported, a jury which included the curators Michael Connor, Samantha Culp, Zhang Ga, and Sabine Himmelsbach selected the duo JODI (Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans) as the winner of the $10,000 “no strings attached” grand prize. The $5,000 award of distinction has been given to Kari Altmann.

The prize for internet art will be awarded three times by Rhizome, TASML, and CAT/CCIA in 2014, 2015 and 2016. According to a statement the prize seeks to honor “a number of artists [who have] embraced the web for its aesthetic and political possibilities, particularly as a way of reaching far-flung publics with a minimum of resources.”

The jury explained their decision by stating “For this inaugural edition of the Prix Net Art, the top award was given in recognition of the rich tradition of web-based art. JODI were key figures in this [first] generation, often disrupting the web—its HTML and other code—in order to make its processes and effects more transparent.”

The jury continued, “The award of distinction, in contrast, is given this year in recognition of future directions and possibilities for internet art. Kari Altmann’s practice is especially important in regard to the changing role of the artist in a highly networked culture.”
