Sarah Harrelson’s publishing career is truly formidable, including stewarding the launch of the Miami Herald’s “Home and Design” section, and editor-in-chief positions at both Ocean Drive and Art Basel Magazine. Fifteen years in, however, she decided that she wanted to start something all her own.

Guided by her desire to uplift voices that remained previously unheard, Harrelson founded Cultured in 2012. The magazine, which covers the intersection of contemporary art, design, architecture, and fashion, is printed on sleek, high-quality paper five times a year, and emphasizes unique, nontraditional photography.

Harrelson’s interest in contemporary art was sparked when she met artist Janine Antoni, with whom she shared a difficult bond: Both women were diagnosed with breast cancer very young. Antoni influenced Sarah’s passion for art, ultimately leading her to her first purchase: a painting by Spencer Sweeney.

Since then, Harrelson has since expanded her interests, collecting works by emerging and established artists including Jonathan Lyndon Chase, Rashid Johnson, Ella Kruglyanskaya, Elle Pérez, Manuel Solano, Kaari Upson, Anicka Yi, among many others.

We caught up with Sarah to hear about her favorite artists, what she’s looking forward to binging on Netflix, and her favorite works available now on Artnet Galleries.

Sarah’s Favorite Things

Restaurant: Il Cantinori. My mom used to meet me there for dinner once a week when I was in college.

TV Show: I cannot wait for season three of Money Heist. I have been watching the series with my youngest daughter.

Bucket list destination: Uganda, to see the gorillas. Or back to Morocco.

Museum: Fondation Beyeler.

Book you’ve read recently: The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben.
