The title of Bojan Šarčević’s exhibition, “Invagination,” might seem rather puzzling but, according to its press release, it refers to some thing being “turned inside-out, turned-in, or folded back on itself.”
Although Šarčević’s work usually comprises video, installation, collage, architectural installation, and abstract sculpture, his latest show features only installation and sculpture, which fit particularly well the white cube space of the London-based gallery Modern Art.
The works on view at “Invagination” represent this unsual theme, and objects are skewed, off center, and at odds.
Using a variety of materials, from rusted metal to found objects, Šarčevićcreates a cluster of situations that are both challenging and amusing, from unknown elemental structures to unusable reception desks.
Šarčević was born in Belgrade in 1974 but spent parts of his childhood in Algeria and Morocco, before moving back to Serbia before the Bosnian war broke out in 1992.
Bojan Šarčević, “Invagination” in on view at Stuart Shave/Modern Art, London, from November 23, 2016 – January 14, 2017.
