In New York, NY, galleries are giving us a taste of what’s to come during next week’s Armory Arts Week, presenting exciting new exhibitions that explore ideas of fantasy and studies of material.

This week, Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in Chelsea, NY, presents Luminous Words, the gallery’s second solo exhibition by Korean artist Airan Kang. The artist’s fascination with books and their depleting role in the digital era is made visible in an installation of LED paintings and over 100 digital lighting books. Influenced by philosophers such as Michel Foucault and Immanuel Kant, Kang creates photorealist paintings of books and luminescent digital sculptures that explore new material, and reflect on themes detailed by these masters of postmodernist theory.

Airan Kang: Luminous Words
will be on display from February 28 to April 6, 2013, at 505 W. 24th Street, New York, NY.

Uptown on 57th Street, Edward Tyler Nahem has collaborated with Chelsea’s Salon 94 Freeman’s to present the most recent installment of artist Iona Rozeal Brown’s ongoing myth, on spirit children and the like. Through fictional characters and scenes, the artist studies themes of “other-worldly, gender-unspecific, cross-cultural spirits.”1 Edward Tyler Nahem will present five new paintings in no one’s ever gonna love you, so don’t wonder, while Salon 94 Freeman’s features Rozeal Brown’s introducing…THE HOUSE OF BANDO, a series of portraits of characters from the artist’s 2011 Performa festival piece, the battle of yestermore. From Byzantine iconography to ukiyo-e woodblock prints of late-Edo period Japan, Brown uses historical influence to present colorfully detailed studies of her own imagined realm.

no one’s ever gonna love you, so don’t wonder will be on display from February 28 to March 29, 2013.
