Veteran Abstract Expressionist Seymour Lipton (American, 1903–1986) juxtaposes light and shadow in order to heighten his structures, as well as to portray different “moods of life,” as suggested through his titles. The carefully curated show at Driscoll Babcock Galleries exhibits the artist’s works from the 1950s and 1960s. At the height of his career, the artist’s technical practice merged impeccably with his abstract and ideological forms, a point celebrated throughout the current exhibition. Don’t miss the shadows produced by light reflecting off the interior and exterior of the bronze material, creating a work of art in itself.

JOSEPHINE HALVORSON: Facings will be on view January 23 to March 1 at Sikkema Jenkins & Co., 530 W. 22nd Street, New York, NY.

Josephine Halvorson, woodshed (Door), 2013, oil on canvas, Sikkema Jenkins & Co., New York, NY

A short Chelsea walk will bring you to another fantastic solo show at Sikkema Jenkins. Carefully studying abstract qualities, such as light and temperature, American artist Josephine Halvorson paints objects in their natural environment at close proximity. The result is a collection of works that present an animate quality, despite the desolation of the object itself. Local woodsheds and structural foundations from the artist’s hometown are carefully depicted in daylight, inviting the viewer to consider their original state and history. These considerations ought to propel the viewer into a deeper consideration of the everyday (object). Despite their simple subject matter, the paintings possess a dynamic and exciting quality accessible to all viewers.
