Fifty-six works from the trove of art found in the Munich apartment of Cornelius Gurlitt were taken from Mainz, says the German city’s cultural department head, Marianne Grosse (SPD). According to the German Press Agency (DPA), Grosse confirmed on Friday a previous report in a Mainz newspaper that the significant collection of works had been on view until 1938 at the Städtische Museum Mainz (Mainz City Museum). Said to be among the 56 are “Im Hotel” by Max Beckmann, “Der Springer” by Willi Baumeister, and unspecified works by Otto Dix, Paul Klee, Emil Nolde, and others.

The announcement comes after approximately 60 more works were recovered from the Salzburg residence of Cornelius Gurlitt, son of Nazi-era art dealer Hildebrandt Gurlitt. More than 1,200 works were found in Gurlitt’s Munich apartment in 2012, a story that dominated the German and international media when it broke in November of 2013.
