Searching for a spooky Halloween? Try spending the night with six million skeletons. What’s not so spooky? Sleeping on a cute branded pillow amid human remains. In other words, Airbnb has partnered with the Catacombs of Paris to offer two morbid romantics the opportunity to stay Halloween night, gratis, in the mass grave.
While amenities do not include kitchen access, wi-fi, or heating, Airbnb assures potential guests that they will be provided with a “dazzling culinary experience” as well as a private concert, and a personal storyteller who will try their best to induce nightmares before bed.
All the contest entails is to write a “story” in English or French of 100 words or less “explaining why you think you’re brave enough to sleep in the Paris Catacombs.”
The catacombs began as a rock quarry in 1777 under Louis XVI, and in 1786 became an ossuary. Today, the 20-meter underground, 11,000 square meter maze holds the skeletons of 6-7 million Parisians. Famous names include 17th-century sculptor François Girardon, Baroque painter Simon Vouet, and notorious figurehead of the French Revolution, Maximilien Robespierre.
Airbnb, the Easy Jet-set’s preferred means of finding lodging while globetrotting, has made inroads into the art world before. In July 2014, they partnered with the London Design Festival, sent a floating house installation down the River Thames in May 2015, and in June 2015 paired with Dutch designers to create innovative sleeping units for Urban Campsite Amsterdam.
The contest ends on October 20. See images of the oddly-branded sleeping quarters below.
