ISA GENZKEN
“Issie Energie”
König Galerie, Berlin
November 11, 2017-January 7, 2018
What the Gallery Says: “Isa Genzken is one of the most influential figures in contemporary art. Her iconographic use of everyday materials elicits a shift in the perspective of the viewer and frees the industrially produced materials she works with from their original meaning. Her eccentric imagination ignores the established laws of composition, oversteps the boundaries of sculpture and again and again pushes us to the limits of what we can take in.”
Why It’s Worth a Look: The show gives a real sense of how much Genzken can do within the borders of her rakishly inscrutable style, from messy tableaux with mannequins that she calls “Schauspieler” (actors), to new 2-D abstract works made with brightly colored tape, diaristic photo-collages, and wonky concrete sculptures.
