The artists Karen Kramer and Alice May Williams have been announced as the winners of the prestigious Jerwood/FVU Awards 2016, a joint initiative from Jerwood Charitable Foundation and Film and Video Umbrella.

Each will receive a £20,000 commission to develop new film projects.

The two winning artists were selected from a shortlist of six finalists. Over 250 applicants submitted proposals responding to the curatorial theme of “Borrowed Time.”

Kramer and Williams will be afforded a 10-month development period to realize their proposals, which seek to reflect on the precariousness of our economic and ecological reality.

The final moving-image works will be shown in an exhibition that will open in March 2016 at London’s Jerwood Space and will then tour to the CCA, Glasgow.

“The submitted work was as strong as it was varied,” Sam Thorne, artistic director of Tate St Ives and a member of the jury panel, said in statement. “It made me excited for the future of moving-image work in the UK–a future that these awards have already done so much to support. I was particularly impressed by Karen Kramer’s extraordinary use of sound and text, and by Alice May Williams’s playful exploration of online imagery,” he added.

The Jerwood/FVU Awards was established three years ago to support artists working in the field of the moving image in the first five years of their practice.

The initiative has given £152,000 to a roster of young artists working with video and film, including Ed Atkins, Lucy Clout, Kate Cooper, and Emma Hart.
