Former President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai has donated one of his signature chapan coats to the British Museum in London, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Karzai’s unmistakable purple and green striped coat, which he began wearing to keep warm since his arrival in Kabul after the fall of the Taliban, earned him plaudits from style experts around the world. Designer Tom Ford even praised him as “the most chic man on the planet today.”

However in an interview the politician explained that he wore the traditional garment out of necessity. “When I started wearing a chapan the girls in Kabul went mad, particularly my female cabinet members and younger people. They told me it looked stupid and too conservative but I was cold. I’d left all my clothes in Pakistan.”

A spokeswoman from the British Museum said, “We are delighted to hear the news that the office of former President Karzai has confirmed his offer of one of his cloaks as a gift to the British Museum.” She called the the garment a “world-famous symbol of national and cultural identity,” adding it would become “an important addition” to its collection.

Diplomats close to Karzai revealed that the former President was an anglophile despite the tense British-Afghan relations during his time in office. British and American officials accused Karzai’s government of corruption, and Kabul accused British troops of contributing to the destabilization of Helmand province.
