The 55-year-old director of Germany’s Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Markus Brüderlin, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Frankfurt am Main on Sunday. The museum sent out a press release on Monday confirming Brüderlin’s death.  Its managing director, Henning Schaper, will take over Brüderlin’s responsibilities until a suitable replacement can be found, according to the institution.

Brüderlin joined the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg in 2006. He previously served as chief curator of the Fondation Beyeler outside of Basel from 1996-2005. He was born in Basel in 1958 and spent his university years in Wuppertal and later Vienna. There, he later he founded the Kunstraum Wien art space and the magazine Springer.
