A longtime friend of Kurt Vonnegut is selling off some of the author’s drawings in order to fund a documentary about him. The funny, surreal sketches were given to filmmaker Bob Weide by Vonnegut as gifts.
“Kurt’s always made gifts of his art to me,” Weide told Mashable. “A lot were doodles that turned into an image. He’d come up with thoughts and ideas and phrases and quotes and we’d put them on paper. Some of them were bad jokes that he just loved.”

The limited-edition, signed works are available for sale on Weide’s website, as an extension of a Kickstarter campaign to fund Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck In Time, the first film about Vonnegut’s life. While some are editions of 250, many pieces are editions of only one or two. Prices range between $1,200 and $2,000.

Weide has been working on the film since 1982, when as a young filmmaker and Vonnegut fan, he wrote a letter to the author asking to make a documentary about him. The pair met and began filming over the next several years, with Weide capturing Vonnegut’s speaking engagements, the promotional tour for the his final novel, Timequake, and even his 60th high school reunion. While filming, they developed a friendship that would last until Vonnegut’s death in 2007.

The film has been delayed for decades due to lack of financing, but the Kickstarter campaign has already exceeded its goal of $250,000 with five days to go. Weide hopes to release the project in late 2015.
