Lauren Cornell has been awarded a new post at the New Museum as “curator and associate director, technology initiatives,” the museum announced today.
In her new role, Cornell will lead the museum’s digital projects and is also working on a series of public programs and traveling exhibitions.
Cornell has just finished working on the well-received 2015 New Museum Triennial “Surround Audience,” which she co-curated with artist Ryan Trecartin. The roster of artists, most of whom are working with new media and technologies included Lisa Tan, Nicholas Mangan, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, and Ed Atkins. The triennial, in its third year, was celebrated as one of the first large-scale, mainstream exhibitions of artists working with new media and the internet.
Prior to this, Cornell was executive director of Rhizome, which supports and provides a platform for artists working with new media and the internet, and adjunct curator at the New Museum. She also founded the art and tech conference, Seven on Seven.
“This new post is a critical one at a moment when culture is increasingly consumed through social media and the web and as the digital continues to revolutionize the world, our work, and art,” said Lisa Phillips, director at the New Museum, in a statement. “Lauren is in a unique position to take the conversation and the Museum forward and has already made an enormous contribution to our pre-eminence in the field.”
Cornell has also been editing Mass Effect: Art and the Internet in the Twenty-First Century with critic and curator Ed Halter which will be published by the New Museum and MIT press this autumn.
