Lisa Oppenheim has been awarded the 2014 Shpilman International Prize for Excellence in Photography by the Israel Museum, Jerusalem. The American artist and photographer accepted the $45,000 prize at an award ceremony at the museum.

She prevailed over 160 other applicants from 28 countries to win the award, for her existing work and proposed future photographic projects.

Jury member Noam Gal said “We congratulate Lisa Oppenheim on becoming the third recipient of the Shpilman International Prize, whose purpose is to recognize, encourage, and cultivate advancements in the field of photography internationally.”

Explaining the jury’s decision, Gal continued, “her choices of subjects – including the future project she presented in her application, Imprint (Shroud of Turin) – give promise to the perpetuation of this fascinating artistic path.”

Gal was joined on the jury by: Quentin Bajac, Chief Curator of Photography at MoMA, New York; Monika Faber, Founder and Director of the Photoinstitute Bonartes, Vienna; Ruth E. Iskin, Professor Emeritus of Art History at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev; and Galit Eilat, Co-Curator of the 2014 São Paulo Art Biennial.

Founded in 2010 and awarded every two years, the Shpilman Prize seeks to support photographers and artists in their artistic practice and research. Previous recipients of the prize were Michael Heiman in 2010, and John Jacob in 2012.
