For the first time since the artist’s passing earlier this year, an authorized, posthumous edition by Japanese artist Keiichi Tanaami has been produced, based on the 1973 work Coral Reef’s Edge. Created in collaboration between Lito Editions and the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) Miami. Lito Editions, which is based in Bregenz, Austria, is primely situated for the commission as a next-gen printmaking company specializing in original, limited-run artist editions. Using cutting-edge technologies, including the patented Hi-Rnd tech, the pieces produced exist at the intersection between fine art prints, limited editions, and unique artworks. The debut of Tanaami’s Coral Reef’s Edge (2024) marks the occasion of the artist’s first solo exhibition at a museum in the U.S., “Keiichi Tanaami: Memory Collage,” on view at the ICA Miami through March 30, 2025.

Tanaami first rose to prominence in the post-war period with his vivid, graphic style that incorporated elements of both American and Japanese culture, leading him to be broadly associated with Pop art and Psychedelia. Working across a wide variety of mediums—including painting, drawing, and printmaking as well as video and sculpture—the artist referenced not only his own experience during the war but aesthetic dichotomies between East and West, such as American commercial imagery with traditional Japanese modes and techniques like manga or woodblock printing.

Tanaami’s singular style, which is surveyed within his solo show at the ICA Miami, is exemplified by Coral Reef’s Edge (2024), which has been produced in an edition of 200 using Lito’s Hi-Rnd technology, allowing for the creation of both relief and texture. Reflecting Tanaami’s penchant for bold color schemes and graphic compositions, as well as his influence on the global Pop art movement, the print was created based on collected data from the original 1973, edited to relay the core, dazzling ethos of the work. For both long-time followers of Tanaami and those new to his work, the new iteration Coral Reef’s Edge speaks to his individual creativity and universal themes. Further, for the entire limited-edition run, a portion of the proceeds will go towards supporting the ICA Miami’s exhibition program.

Alex Gartenfeld, the ICA Miami’s Irma and Norman Braman Artistic Director, said of the occasion, “We were honored to work with Keiichi Tanaami and Lito Editions to create this exceptional tribute to the artist’s work and to extend the reach of his first solo U.S. museum exhibition at ICA Miami. This important image commemorates Tanaami’s practice and legacy, and makes his work accessible to the widest audience possible.”
