Following in Kanye West’s footsteps, Madonna is the latest A-list celebrity to liken herself to master artist Pablo Picasso.
“I like to compare myself to other kinds of artists like Picasso,” she told the Canadian Press in an interview. “He kept painting and painting until the day he died. Why? Because I guess he felt inspired to do so. Life inspired him, so he had to keep expressing himself, and that’s how I feel.”
“I don’t think there’s a time, a date, an expiration date for being creative,” she continued when asked about the fact that at age 56, she’s still touring. “I think you go until you don’t have any more to say.”
This isn’t the first time Madonna has likened herself to a lionized historical figure. Earlier this year, she landed in hot water for co-opting the faces of people like Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Jr., Bob Marley, Marilyn Monroe, Princess Diana, and John Lennon for a social media campaign to promote her album Rebel Heart.
After accusations flew that she was trying to elevate herself to the level of these historical icons in a half-baked attempt to sell more albums, she tweeted: “I’m sorry. I’m not comparing my self to anyone. I’m admiring and acknowledging there (sic) Rebel Hearts.”
But if this latest interview is any evidence, Madge has no intention of holding her tongue when it comes to absurd comparisons.
The pop star, who once dated Jean-Michel Basquiat, also owns an extensive art collection by the likes of Frida Kahlo, Marilyn Minter, and yes, Picasso himself. However, she’s notoriously protective over the collection and even refused to loan a rare Kahlo to the Detroit Institute of Arts for their buzzy recent exhibition “Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in Detroit.”
