THE DAILY PIC: This fantastical vision of Kate Moss was made in 2006 by British artist Marc Quinn, and it’s called Sphinx (Fortuna). The piece is in the show called “A Secret Affair: Selections from the Fuhrman Family Collection”, which I caught both in its original home at the Contemporary Austin museum and where it is now at the Flag Art Foundation in New York.

Quinn’s image of absolute availability – full-frontal seems so tame by comparison – registers as a potent symbol of what cultural icons like Moss have always been about, but also of how everyone is coming to feel in our new age of mandatory self-promotion. (Courtesy the artist and Mary Boone Gallery)
