Let’s turn our sights to Milan this week. Starting today, the miart fair will bring the Modern and contemporary art community together in its annual event, seeking to “grasp links between the past and present.” The fair attracts a range of exhibitors from around the world, including Bortolami, Gladstone Gallery, and Art Bärtschi & Cie, but don’t overlook what else is on view out in the local galleries of Milan.
Your first stop should be at DEP ART to see the spectacular exhibition of rarely seen Alighiero Boetti works on paper. In this series from the 1980s, the Arte Povera master reveals a little-known side of himself thorough dazzlingly imaginative collages. Then, another standout show is Andrea Bowers’ powerful “disrupting and resisting,” which focuses on the American activist response to the 2016 election and aftermath—it just opened yesterday. You should also keep Barbara Frigerio Contemporary Art on your radar, which currently presenting a range of austere photographs by Italian artist Giuseppe Umberto Cavaliere. Titled “Nulla Essenziale,” the series is inspired by metaphysical studies and are created through an elaborate printing process that gradually disrupts the photographic image, resulting in elegantly ambigious abstractions.
And there’s more where that came from. Find artnet’s full list of picks below, and enjoy a favoloso weekend of gallery hopping.
