“Minimalist” and “Miley” are two words that have probably never been used in the same sentence before. But the pot smoking pop star, Art Basel in Miami Beach fixture (see Inside Miley Cyrus’s Exclusive ABMB Concert), and new Jeffrey Deitch pal (see Miley Takes Miami Beach, Thanks to Jeffrey Deitch, and Jeffrey Deitch Compares “Remarkable” Miley Cyrus to Mike Kelley) has clearly gone in a new direction with her artwork.

Miley’s photograph of a single dying flower on a black background is to be used as an album cover for friend and fellow pop sensation Cody Simpson. Cyrus found the flower languishing in her living room, and was going to shoot it hipster-style, using a Polaroid camera. But, she told Rolling Stone (in typical Miley parlance): “I said fuck it, I’m just going to shoot this shit on an iPhone.”

She went on to say that she took a momentary hiatus from her out-there style because, “I just wanted something where people didn’t have a stereotypical idea of what he was and could just look at the song [“Flower”] for what it is, because it’s a fucking epic song.”

Indeed, the photograph is a far cry from her first and most memorable foray into the visual arts, “Dirty Hippie,” the erotic, technicolor sculptures she presented last year in unison with Jeremy Scott’s Spring/Summer 2015 runway show (see Miley Cyrus Makes Erotic Sculptures).

While we’re not quite ready to accept her as a serious artist, we like this new, tamer side of Miley. And we wonder, does this mean an end to the days of the ubiquitous nipple pasties? Or does it simply mean that flower-shaped nipple pasties are on the horizon?
