Palestinian artist Iyad Sabbah has planted a family of clay covered fiber glass sculptures in the Shuja’iyya neighborhood in central Gaza in reaction to the most recent Israeli bombing on October 21, Designboom reports.

Facing away from the desecrated buildings behind them, the work, titled Worn Out, commemorates the citizens and families that were either killed or had to abandon their homes throughout the over 50-day-long Israeli airstrike marathon in Gaza. Streaks of red resin, representing the large number of lives lost, peek through the sculptures’ layers of clay—a reference to the buildings destroyed in the Gaza strip during the conflict.

Reuters reported recently that “18,000 dwellings were destroyed or damaged in 50 days of fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants, and 108,000 people are homeless.” An homage to all that has been lost, the sculptures also stand as a reminder to survivors to remain stalwart in the face of the rebuilding of the Gaza strip with the most recent $5.4 billion pledge at the Gaza aid conference in Cairo.
