Let’s dive right in to 2018. New York might be really cold—truly, it is so cold that if you haven’t left your apartment since Christmas, I absolutely cannot fault you for it—but still, you need to go outside sometime. Cabin fever is real, and there’s too many gallery shows that are too good to pass up right now.
Kick things off with the ‘80s madness that is Elizabeth Murray at Pace Gallery. If you’re not here for her gargantuan, unapologetically garish canvases, I don’t know what to tell you. They’re spectacular, and sneakily complex. If that’s really not your cup of tea, might I suggest the politically relevant photography group show at Howard Greenberg Gallery, which features art and artists that explore issues relating to immigration, labor, and assimilation. Then, there’s a show opening this Saturday at P.P.O.W. that I’m dying to check out: Elizabeth Glaessner is bringing a ton of energy and originality to the colorful figuration moment that painting is having right now, and I’m curious to see her work in person. Another exhibition worth the detour is the David Hockney works on paper survey up at Paul Kasmin Gallery, which serves as a nice companion to the Met retrospective, if you’re looking for a double feature.
The good news is: as always, there’s plenty out there to choose from. Bundle up, and find artnet’s full list of picks below.
