This morning, the Creative Foundation has announced details of the artists who will take part in the fourth edition of the Folkestone Triennial, slated to take place from September 2-November 5, 2017.

The list of participating artists includes Antony Gormley, Lubaina Himid, Sol Calero, David Shrigley, Bob and Roberta Smith, and Amalia Pica.

The 2017 triennial, titled double edge, takes place in Folkestone on the coast of the English Channel.

Site-specific public works that respond to the physical and conceptual context of the port town will be commissioned from participating artists, thus continuing the “sense of place” theme from the 2014 iteration.

double edge draws its title from the two focal points around which Folkestone built itself: the seashore and the ancient Pent Stream. This is further compounded by today’s focus on the idea of border—the “liminal” question that is so often mentioned in contemporary academia.

“The title double edge keys ambiguity first of all, and has two principal meanings following from that—the first is anxiety: the edge of the world, the edge of the future and the unknown. The second is the notion of balance, released through the artist’s imagination when one tips over the edge and looks back on the known with a renewed perspective,” said Triennial curator Lewis Biggs in a statement.
