During a ceremony that took place last night, the Paul Hamlyn Foundation (PHF) announced that Bonnie Camplin, Michael Dean, Rosalind Nashashibi, Katrina Palmer, and James Richards are the winners of its Visual Arts Awards 2014. Martin Green, Shebaka Hutchings, and Pat Thomas received the Composers Awards.
The Visual Arts jury was composed by Jane Hamlyn, chair of the foundation, artist Ed Atkins (who received the award in 2012), Gavin Delahunty, senior curator of the Dallas Museum of Art, Mary Griffiths, curator at the Whitworth Art Gallery, and Anthony Spira, director of Milton Keynes Gallery.
The PHF is one of the larger independent grant-making foundations in the UK, and the award is a generous one: each winner receives £50,000 over three years, with no obligations or conditions as to how the money is used.
The awards, which currently celebrate their 20th anniversary, are aimed at UK-based practicing visual artists of any age. The goal of the prize is to support artists at pivotal times of their careers, encouraging them to continue their work despite pressures, financial or otherwise.
Since their inception in 1994, the Paul Hamlyn awards have helped around a 100 UK visual artists, who have received grants for a total amount of almost £4 million.
Previous recipients of the award include: Ian White (2013), Elizabeth Price (2012), Sue Tompkins (2011), Ángela de la Cruz (2010), Marc Camille Chaimowicz (2009), Duncan Campbell (2008), Mark Leckey (2007), Jeremy Deller (2001), and Hilary Lloyd (2000).
