The Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) has announced five new commissioned installations that will launch alongside the opening of Art Basel in Miami Beach in December.

The five artists tapped by PAMM for the series—Nicole Cherubini, Gary Simmons, Shana Lutker, Iman Issa, and Mario Garcia Torres—will each have to work within a broader theme that pays tribute to the museum’s cultural roots in South Florida.

“Site-specific and commissioned works are a vital part of PAMM’s curatorial and public vision and program,” PAMM director Thom Collins said in a statement. “These types of projects afford us the opportunity to connect with a wide range of voices and to inspire a meaningful dialogue among the local, national, and international creative communities, the public, and the Museum.”

The installations are diverse in inspiration and media. Torres, a Mexico-based artist, has produced a mixed-media installation that the museum says will focus on “South Florida as a site for withdrawal from society for the purposes of artistic creation,” while, by contrast, Cairo-born artist and Cooper Union professor Iman Issa has provided some fiction and essays for the exhibition.

Other works include a 30 × 29 foot temporary mural by Simmons that opens on November 14; free-standing and wall-based ceramics by Brooklyn-based Cherubini; and sculptural installations by Lutker, who will also give a lecture on her research into the various public brawls that surrealist artists were involved in.

All five installations in the “Project Gallery” series will be on view between now and September 13 of next year.
