Although the art market is murky, some would argue the diamond market is murkier. Around 90 percent of the world’s diamonds pass through the famous New York City diamond district, and it is unclear what percentage of that 90, are from reputable dealers and cutters.

The notorious Pink Panthers group, from former Yugoslavia, especially from Montenegro and neighboring Serbia, has stolen an estimated $500 million worth of jewels in the past 15 years, according to Interpol. Known for their high-profile, high-worth, smash and grab robberies, the international jewel heist network was named after the The Pink Panther series of crime-comedy films by Interpol. Even after a 2012 arrest of one of its leaders, they don’t seem to be slowing down.

VICE delves into the underbelly of the jewelry heist group in this short documentary. The film explores the origins of the group and features interviews with older generations of Panthers as well as the gang’s new trainees.
