Writer, musician, and part-time performance artist Amanda Palmer bared it all yesterday in front of the New York Public Library (NYPL). The eight-month pregnant meticulously painted Palmer stood on a wooden platform surrounded by books. One half of the artist’s body was painted brown, while the other half was painted as if exposing her anatomy and her unborn child.
Clutching a raised sword, the artist clearly nods to British YBA artist Damien Hirst’s Verity statue that stands at the entrance of Ilfracombe harbour in Devon, England.
On August 17, Palmer alluded to the surprise event in a post on her blog.
“I’m doing a kind of goodbye Thing before going off to birth this baby,” she wrote. “This is a slightly weird one, but bear with me….it’ll be worth it, i swear.”
The event was free of charge, but Palmer asked attendees to donate children’s book for the NYPL’s literacy program.
In 2012, Palmer, or “Amanda Fucking Palmer,” as her fans call her, announced she would launch a new album pre-order on Kickstarter which eventually raised $1.2 million in funds. It was the largest funding a musical Kickstarter had ever raised. In 2014, she published a book about her life and struggle as an artist, titled The Art of Asking: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Let People Help Me.
