Richard Parry has been appointed director of Glasgow International, the biennial festival of contemporary art in Scotland. He succeeds Sarah McCrory, who was recently appointed as the director of the new gallery at Goldsmiths in London.
Parry was formerly curator-director of the Grundy Art Gallery in Blackpool since 2013, prior to which he served as assistant curator at Hayward Gallery in London. While at Grundy Art Gallery, he curated over 25 exhibitions, including the 2016 show “NEON: The Charged Line,” the largest exhibition of neon-based art to be held in the UK. It included Joseph Kosuth, Fiona Banner, Mai-Thu Perret, Eddie Peake, and Paulina Olowska.
While at Hayward Gallery, he curated “Psycho Buildings” (2008), “The New Décor” (2010), and “Wide Open School” (2012), in addition to a 2011 Tracey Emin exhibition.
“I am thrilled and deeply honored to be joining Glasgow International as its new Director. Glasgow has a contemporary art scene to rival that of any city in the world and Glasgow International has played an increasingly significant role since its inception over a decade ago,” Parry said in a statement.
“I look forward to building on the program of my predecessors, whom I hold in high regard, and working with artists based here and internationally to develop its next chapter,” he concluded.
Glasgow International will stage its 8th iteration from April 20—May 7, 2018, with details about the program to be announced later this year. The festival is comprised of exhibitions in various locations across the city, and includes events, talks, performances, and projects by both international and Glasgow-based artists.
