Richard Serra unveiled his latest monumental sculpture today: four gigantic plates spanning over a kilometer in the Qatari desert, 60 km from the capital Doha. Entitled East-West/West-East, the piece was commissioned by Qatar Museums Authority (QMA). QMA is behind the artist’s first solo show in the region, which opens at the QMA gallery at Katara and the Al Riwaq Exhibition Hall on Thursday.
According to UAE newspaper The National, the unveiling also marks the beginning of an ecotourism project designed to preserve the desert, and realized in collaboration with the QMA.
