What You Need to Know: Robert Fontaine Gallery is currently presenting the group exhibition “Intimate” at its Miami Beach location in the South of Fifth neighborhood. On view through June 25, 2023, the exhibition features a diverse range of artists, including Nick Gentry, Larry Clark, Corey K. Lamb, Louis Fratino, Henrietta Harris, Celia Hempton, Moyosore Martins, and Hossein Edalatkhah, among others. Curated by Lander de Basterra, the show includes a selection of paintings, sculptures, and photography centered on themes of identity and intimacy—specifically in the realm of the personal and domestic. Together, the works within the exhibition offer visitors the chance to explore myriad artistic perspectives and interpretations of inner worlds and the profoundly familiar.
Why We Like It: Intimacy is an endlessly complex and subjective topic, open to variable understandings from person to person. Each work within the exhibition “Intimate” provides a glimpse into its meaning and resonance for the artist, inherently generating a degree of intimacy between viewer and creator. Choices of motif, color palette, and composition each individually take on expanded meaning, offering insight into the artist’s own, unique viewpoint on intimacy—whether it be interpersonally, societally, or culturally based. The vacillation between figuration and abstraction too from one artist’s work to the next featured in the show further invites greater, overarching discussions and considerations around individual identity and how intimacy as a concept contains a plurality of meaning.
According to the Gallery: “Within the brushstrokes and sculptures, an intimate symphony of identities unfolds, celebrating the beauty and resilience of our diverse stories. This art show is a vibrant tapestry, weaving together the threads of love, desire, and liberation, inviting all to witness the power of intimacies, where art becomes a mirror for our souls.”—Curator, Lander de Basterra
“I think I have moved our gallery more times than I can blink..but this space is rather charming, boutique…the exhibition which Lander de Basterra has put together really takes into account not only the contemporary theme but also the venue itself, as a central part of the exhibition showcase. Its nice to work inside a space with original works that are harmonious and blend to what the space will allow, there is a reward, or maybe a sense of relief in working inside a niche which creates barriers and opportunity from it.”—Gallery Owner, Robert Fontaine
