THE DAILY PIC (#1579): I caught this work last week at the Studio Museum in Harlem, as possibly the strongest piece in a strong solo show by Rodney McMillian. It is nothing more than a piece of cheap carpet worn almost to death in some modest worker’s home. At first it may look like a new riff on old minimal abstraction, but McMillian deploys it, as a semiotician might say, as an instantly legible indexical sign of class, race and culture.
