San Francisco’s museums may be the first thing grabbing the attention of out-of-town visitors, especially with the recently renovated San Francisco Museum of Modern Art having reopened its doors last year. But the city has been attracting an increasing number of important galleries and dealers, so its local gallery scene may soon be stealing the spotlight.
This week, there’s plenty to choose from: Head over to Brian Gross Fine Art for the eccentric, psychedelic drawings of Roy De Forest, which also feature the artist’s elaborate handmade frames. Fraenkel Gallery hosts the photo-based paintings of Elisheva Biernoff that, with their casual snapshot aesthetic, hint at intimate family histories. If you’re an Andy Goldsworthy fan, you should pay a visit to Haines Gallery for “Drawing Water Standing Still,” a solo exhibition dedicated to his recent photographic and video work. Then, Hosfelt Gallery mounts a group show with an intriguing concept, where each artist exemplifies “the ethos of Silicon Valley in the form of the genius ‘garage’ inventor.” Here you’ll find sculpture built out of old electronics, notably including the work of pioneering artist Nam June Paik.
