The 32nd São Paulo Biennial has announced 81 participating artists and collectives, including Francis Alÿs, Rachel Rose, Barbara Wagner, and Ursula Biemann.

Many of the artists are working in the iconic Brazilian city on projects addressing issues that concern the people living there. Works by artists currently being developed through local residencies include Carla Filipe, who is working with the Botanical Institute to create a garden of edible and spontaneous plants; another project by Iza Tarasewicz explores the history of the Polish musical rhythm known as Mazurka in Brazil.

“We are seeking to understand diversity, to look at the unknown and question what we assume to be known,” said Jochen Volz who is co-curating the biennial together with Gabi Ngcobo, Júlia Rebouças, Lars Bang Larsen, and Sofía Olascoaga. “We view the different knowledges of our world as complementary rather than exclusionary.”

“The proximity of the curators with the Fundação Bienal team, as well as the expansion of the institution’s partnerships, make the 32nd Biennial an especially fertile edition,” said foundation president Luís Terepins in a statement. “So far, we are counting on the commitment of 48 partners, including companies, governmental agencies and cultural institutions,” along with “international organizations that support the arts,” he added.
