This October, the Savannah College of Art and Design will open a new fashion museum on its Atlanta campus.

Thirteen years after it opened the SCAD Museum of Art on its Savannah campus, the school will unveil SCADfash, a new 10,000 square-foot museum dedicated to the conservation, exploration, and conversation of its fashion collection.

The space will consist of a public gallery, a fashion conservation lab, and a media library that will have a special emphasis on digital and film presentations.

Its inaugural exhibition “Oscar de la Renta,” celebrating the late designer, will feature garments from the mid-1960s through the present, including dresses worn by Lauren Bush, Taylor Swift, and Oprah Winfrey, as well as designs from his successor Peter Copping.

Future programming include exhibitions “Art x Fashion” which will look at the relationship between art and design and “i feel ya: SCAD + André 3000 Benjamin,” which explores fashion, film, and painting through three individuals: André Benjamin (aka André 3000) of the Atlanta-based hip-hop group Outkast, filmmaker Greg Brunkalla, and painter Jimmy O’Neal. The exhibition originally ran at SCAD Museum of Art.

In the US there are currently only three college museums dedicated to fashion, including the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising Museum in Los Angeles, the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, and the Kent State University Museum in Ohio.
