We’re getting to the soul of Seoul this week, bringing you an explosion of exhibitions in South Korea’s capitol—many of which are nearing close or fresh off opening night. Our guide is stacked with New York-based artists exhibiting abroad, and in the case of MADSAKI, the graffiti artist discovered by Takashi Murakami, it’s his first solo show. Galerie Perrotin displays the work of this ironic Japanese artist through the New Year, but before the ball drops there’s much you shouldn’t miss if you find yourself in the world’s ninth-most visited city.
See the newest work of allusive American painter Hernan Bas and rising-star Korean painter Young Do Jeong right before this joint show wraps up at PKM Gallery on November 25. If you share New York-based architecture firm Snarkitecture’s fondness for the marble games of childhood, then you’ll definitely want to check out their expansive, kinetic Loop installation at Gana Art Gallery coming to a close on November 19. For the cinephiles out there, we haven’t forgotten about you. We’d like to alert you to the 60-year career retrospective of avant-garde filmmaker Jonas Mekas at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. The exhibit presents Mekas’ video installations, photographs, and pages from his journals with a scope not previously enjoyed in Asia, illuminating his connections to Andy Warhol’s Factory, the Fluxus movement, and his impact on a generation of filmmakers.
