According to media reports the long-planned, 10-foot-tall, bronze statue of RoboCop, the fictional cyborg law enforcement agent from the same-named 1987 Paul Verhoeven film, was set to be unveiled in Detroit today, June 3, which is RoboCop Day. While the team that is currently building the statue was due to take part in a since-canceled event at the Detroit Police Department headquarters, they were only ever going to be showing pieces of the sculpture, according to a post on the group’s Facebook page, and that event has been canceled in any case, as the Detroit Free Press reports.

“Despite false reporting with some media outlets, the RoboCop Statue WILL NOT be unveiled today,” an administrator of the Build a Robocop Statue in Detroit page on Facebook writes. “There was talk of participating in an event today and displaying some parts of the model. Unfortunately this proved to be logistically impossible. We plan on announcing the public location of the statue in the near future and when we are ready for a big reveal, you will be the first to know.”

Though many will be disappointed to hear they’ll have to continue waiting for the bronze colossus’s unveiling, the robot cop will be throwing the first pitch at tonight’s Detroit Tigers-Toronto Blue Jays game, so there’s that.

The idea for the RoboCop sculpture, which has its genesis in a 2011 tweet directed at then-mayor of Detroit Dave Bing, spawned a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over $50,000 in funding. The actual date and location of the statue’s unveiling has yet to be determined.
