About the Artist: Geneva-based artist Cedric Koukjian (b. 1985) is an experimental industrial designer concentrating on sculptural works across multiple mediums and materials, from miniature carvings and metalwork to large monuments. Koukjian often collaborates with his father, Pierre Koukjian, under the studio design name SINCE Geneva. In his own practice, Koukjian has focused his creative work on the concept of the “link” as a visual metaphor for the bonding which he attempts to materialize in sculptural form. Koukjian’s artistic practice and research has brought him around the world, living across Europe to the plains of the Himalayas, and letting cross-cultural experiences shape his vision.

Why We Like It: The artist creates monumental links from a wide range of materials, including steel, marble, and resin, through labor-intensive processes. Koukjian’s marble works, for instance, are made from single blocks of marble that the artist sculpts by hand. This process involves the artist carving the individual links with extreme precision so that the individual links have movement and the entire sculpture is flexible. Right now, the artist has a selection of his resin sculptures on view in “Liaisons,” an exhibition of his works on view at the Bulgari flagship store in Geneva.

According to the Artist:  “At Bulgari, I am exhibiting a series of resin links which mimic the colors of gemstones: amethysts, citrine, sapphire… The symbol of the chain was a good marriage with the jewelry world. Also, the technique I used to carve these works is one used by ancient master jade cutters. I discovered this technique through my vast travels in the Tibetan steppes and ancient towns in Japan.”
