A group of pro-gun activists is planning to stage a controversial performance this weekend near the University of Texas at Austin (UT). Initially, the group, which is comprised of over 100 activists from Come and Take It Texas and DontComply.com, had planned “mock shooting” to take place on the UT campus December 12, but after the administration threatened possible arrests, they’ve announced they are moving it across the street.

In an interview with the Houston Chronicle, organizer Murdoch Pizgatti described it as a “public theatrical performance against gun-free zones” that will look like “a hostage situation where people are shot and then the one person with a concealed handgun will come in and save the situation and reduce the body count.”

The performance will make use of cardboard guns, and the organizers reportedly have obtained bright orange t-shirts that look like those worn by anti-gun group Gun-Free UT. As of Friday, 1,000 people were invited to the Facebook event, titled “Life and Liberty Walk To End Gun Free Zones,” but only 82 say they are going.

The proposed performance has garnered criticism from students, faculty, and administrators alike. “Campus carry advocates want us to trust and respect them as so-called law-abiding gun owners. This event shows why we don’t,” Joan Neuberger, a professor of Russian history, told the Houston Chronicle.

When asked about challenges from university officials and fellow students, organizer Jason Orsek eloquently stated: “I don’t know they are being such buttholes.”

2013 US Department of Justice report concludes that only three percent of mass shootings between 2000 and 2013 were stopped by armed individuals.
