New Museum skateboard
The Chapman x New Museum skateboard next to its inspiration.

The New Museum store is paying homage to the intersection of high culture and skate culture. In collaboration with Chapman Skateboards, a limited edition run of 150 boards shaped like the museum’s SANAA-designed building are now available for purchase. The boards are crafted from wood and covered in high-gloss paint, giving them a metallic sheen and a simple, streamlined look. The idea was derived from a 2012 window installation of artist-inspired skateboards created by Canyon Castator and Richard Duff, which featured, among other things, Hirst-bespotted boards.

As the product description so eloquently states, you’ll be joining the ranks of “artists like Larry Clark, Harmony Korine, Ari Marcopoulos, and Ed Templeton [who] have looked to skate culture—a culture where the body’s action propels it forward at breakneck speeds and where the city becomes a concrete labyrinth reduced to its simplest geometry—as a source of inspiration.” By taking on the shape of the museum’s iconic building on the Bowery, the product also honors the legions of kids who have skated the backstreets of the neighborhood for years.

At $125 for a limited edition of 150, what better way is there to show your skater punk friends you’re more cultured than they are?
