Though it may seem that Armory Week and Frieze Week get all the action, the reality is that there is never a dull moment in the New York art world. From the East Side to the West Side, there’s always something happening at the city’s museums, galleries, and various event spaces. This week was no exception.
The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts’s Second Benefit Art Auction
MoCADA launched their second Benefit Art Auction on Tuesday at a mixer in the Meatpacking District. Guests spotted at the event include Gateway Project Spaces co-directors Jasmine Wahi and Rebecca Jampol; art critic and writer Antwaun Sargent; Jewish Museum director of communications JiaJia Fei; and artists ruby onyinyechi amanze. The Paddle8 auction, which starts on Tuesday, May 5 and runs through May 19, was curated by MoCADA board member Mickalene Thomas and includes works by Carrie Mae Weems and Dread Scott.

Free Arts NYC 17th Annual Art Auction
“Glenn’s a cultural icon in New York city, and I don’t think people realize that,” Free Arts NYC founder Liz Hopfan told artnet News at the organization’s annual art auction, honoring writer, editor, and art director Glenn O’Brien. “He’s touched so many artists and creative people’s lives,” she added.
The April 27 event, which featured a silent auction and seated dinner at the beautiful Surrogates Court, had a impressive list of attendees, including “Girls” star and artist Jemima Kirke, actress Leelee Sobieski, art dealers Tony Shafrazi and Jeffrey Deitch, Studio Museum in Harlem director Thelma Golden, and actor and Marlborough Chelsea director Leo Fitzpatrick.
Artists Richard Prince (the night’s host) Rashid Johnson, Dustin Yellin, Dan Colen, Marilyn Minter, Nan Goldin, Christopher Wool, and husband and wife Carroll Dunham and Laurie Simmons were also in attendance.

“Andy’s A-List: Warhol Photographs” at artnet
To celebrate its current auction, “Andy’s A-List: Warhol Photographs,” artnet Auctions held an exhibition and party on April 27 of the Pop art master’s star-studded photographs, featuring such luminaries as Yoko Ono, David Hockney, Jane Fonda, Grace Jones, Mick and Bianca Jagger, Truman Capote, Bette Midler, John Travolta, and Karl Lagerfeld.
Factory member Christopher Makos, who taught Warhol how to use a 35 mm camera, was on hand for the opening, and gave guests a play-by-play of some of the iconic shots. Visitors also enjoyed a Warhol-themed photo booth, replete with a blond wig, Brillo box, skull, and cans of Campbell’s soup.

Creative Time Gala
New Creative Time director Katie Hollander was among the honorees at the organization’s April 28 Spring Gala, presented by Bombay Sapphire Gin, along with Miami Design District founder Craig Robins and artist Rirkrit Tiravanija. Domenico De Sole, Jeffrey Deitch, Vik Muniz, Neville Wakefield, and Kara Walker were among the evening’s hosts.
The event was held at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, at the future Mast Brothers Chocolate Factory, and featured a Miami theme in Robins’s honor, with a Lido Deck pool bar featuring DIY gin and tonic stations. Tiravanija teamed up with Bombay Sapphire on an exclusive collaboration, pairing fish sauce ice cream amuse bouche with a “Negroni 5 Ways” cocktail.

Skowhegan 70th Anniversay Celebration & Awards Dinner
On April 26, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture celebrated its 70th anniversary with its annual awards dinner held at the Plaza Hotel. Attendees, who enjoyed cocktails and dinner, included Donald and Shelley Rubin, Mel Chin, Agnes Gund, Donald Moffett, Robert Gober, and Janine Antoni.
